Before becoming a bodybuilder and a personal trainer, Lazar played professional basketball for 10 years.

If you want to get cut abs like Lazar's, you'll need to hit the gym or use weights at home: Resistance training is absolutely essential to the development of strong, distinct abdominal muscles. Adding extra weight to your ab workout routine makes your muscles work harder, causing them to grow while also making your workout routine more intense so that you burn more calories.

Before working out with weights, be sure to set up a cushioned mat to protect your back. Likewise, you should start small, with light weights (about 5 pounds to begin with) and slowly increase the size of the weights you use as your fitness level progresses.

1. The windmill.

Standing with your feet apart, your knees bent, and one dumbbell held in front of your chest (with your left hand), lower into a squat while rotating your torso to the left and straightening both arms. You should reach your right hand toward the floor and your left hand toward the ceiling. Then, raise halfway up out of the squat before lowering back down again and touching the floor with your right hand. Repeat for 15 reps then place the dumbbell in your right hand and exercise the other side of your body with another 15 reps.

2. The weighted crunch.

While lying on a mat, place a weight flat on your chest. Do 20-25 full crunches while keeping the weight securely held against your chest with both arms.

3. The hanging leg raise.

While holding on to a “chin up” exercise bar with your body hanging freely, pull your legs upward, bending them at the knee until you are in an airborne sitting position. Slowly lower your legs and repeat the exercise 10 times.
